Title:

Photographs from the Donald H. McLaughlin papers

Creator/Contributor:

Hoffman, Irwin D., 1901-1989

Abstract:

approximately 100 photographs chiefly dating from 1963-1983, including employees at Los Alamos Labs (portraits), a consultation project in South Africa, an unidentified mining area (many), group portraits, some family related items, meetings, and many reproductions of paintings by Irwin D. Hoffman.
chiefly photographs from McLaughlin's professional travels related to mines and mining, with some early family photographs (chiefly from Cambridge, Massachusetts and New Hampshire) in the 1920s and 1930s, and some photographs related to professional organizations, companies, and the University of California Regents. Notable are snapshots of Peru and mining regions in the Andes (Cerro de Pasco), circa 1919-1925; Mexico (Mazatlan, Tayoltita, and other mining regions) in the 1920s and 1930s; and the Homestake Mine and Lead, South Dakota vicinity. Many aerial photographs are present, including a lantern slides set from South American flights by Richard Upjohn Light. Some personal snapshots from Hearst residences Wyntoon, San Simeon, and perhaps a few from the Hacienda del Poza de Verona are present, chiefly from the 1920s and 1930s. Note that a separate collection (Photographs from the Sylvia and Donald H. McLaughlin papers, BANC PIC 2017.116) contains most portraits and family photographs, particularly of personal life after McLaughlin's marriage to Sylvia Cranmer McLaughlin, as well as some copies of earlier (19th-early 20th century) McLaughlin family portraits. B TEMP box 1 contains individual and group portraits. C folder contains group portrait of U.C. Berkeley department of Mining Engineering class of 1914. LAN boxes 1-24 contain lantern slides, probably used to illustrate lectures, depicting various mining regions around the world and related tables, diagrams, etc.; general regions depicted include South America, Homestake Mine, Mexico, Australia, Arizona, Alaska, South Africa, Canada; lantern slides also depict a 1932 "famous flight" of Richard Upjohn Light.
